63% of Americans support “some legal recognition” of gay partnerships
A recent CBS/New York Times poll has found that around 60% of Americans support some legal recognition of same sex partnerships. This figure represents a slight rise in support of legal recognition through civil unions (30%), but a dip in the amount of people who support gay marriage, which peaked at 42% in April 2009 and is now down to 33%.
30% of those polled believe that there should be no legal recognition of same sex partnerships.
Other issues polled, including affirmative action and abortion, indicated very little variation from previous poll results.
These results come after Friday’s announcement that the US Census Bureau will count same-sex married couples in the 2010 national tally.
